MANSON, Charles (1934-2017). American criminal who led what became known as the Manson family. He is known as the "icon of evil." Charged and convicted of murder and conspiracy. Sentenced to death but that was automatically commuted to life imprisonment by a 1972 court decision eliminating the death penalty in California. He was denied parole 12 times.
