MANKILLER, Wilma. (1945-2010). Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation for 10 years (1985-1995). In the history of the Cherokee’s, she is the first woman to be elected Chief. She was involved in the occupation of Alcatraz Prison during the 1960’s. . She is the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
