LOVELL, Sir Bernard (1913-2012) Noted English physicist and radio astronomer. First Director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory. He worked on developing a radar system to be installed in aircraft. He constructed the largest radio telescope in the world. He was the subject of an assassination attempt during a visit to the Soviet Union. Lovell won numerous awards. FDC, legal size, commemorating the 25th Anniversary, First Artificial Earth Satellite. Wonderful, colorful cachet of the satellite about to be discharged into outer space. Two British postage stamps cancelled at Jodrell Bank (Observatory), 8 September 1982.
