Very RARE Handwritten Poem by WW1 Flying Ace
and Successful Actor Robert Loraine
LORAINE, Robert (1876-1935). Aviation pioneer, daredevil, WW1 Ace. He achieved great fame in September 1910 when he made the first aeroplane flight from England to Ireland.. The same month he piloted one of the two Bristol Boxkites which took part in British Army manouevres on Salisbury Plain, during which he sent the first radio signals to be sent from an aeroplane in Britain. He is sited by the Oxford English Dictionary as the first written example of the word “joystick” to describe aircraft stick controls. Shot on more than one occasion, his wounds were x-rayed by Marie Curie. By the end of the war he reached the rank of lieutenant-general. His awards include the Military Cross and the Distinguished Service-Order. He is one of Britain’s best loved pilots. He was also a successful London and Broadway stage actor particularly associated with the works of George Bernard Shaw. He also won critical acclaim for performances in plays by William Shakespeare and August Strindberg. A handwritten poem quoting from “Cyrano” about a kiss. Nine lines written by Robert Loraine and dated by him August 20, 1919 on a large album page measuring 6”x7”. This is the first item signed by Robert Loraine to cross our desk in almost fifty years. We were able to confirm his signature by comparing it to his pilot’s license signature available on the Internet. In excellent condition..............................$450.00
