- Anna H. Leonowens (1831 - 1915). British travel writer, educator, and social activist,
known for teaching the wives and children of Mongkut, king of
Siam, and for co-founding the Nova Scotia College of Art and
Design. Leonowens's experiences in Siam were fictionalized in
Margaret Landon's 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam
and in three films, most notably Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1951
hit musical The King and I.
Very Scarce Autograph Letter
Signed, two pages, large octavo, New Brighton, Staten Island,
d. September 8, 1875. Reads, "My Dear Dr. Walker, We
returned from Newport last Friday to find your card among other
callers, during our absence from home. I was very sorry to have
missed seeing you, and therefore write to say that if you have
no engagements for next Sunday we shall be happy if you would
come to the Island and dine with us. With kind regards, I am,
yours very truly, A.H. Leonowens." She adds, "Our
dinner hour is about 2 o'clock on Sundays. A.H.L."

good example. Comes together with an original large 7 in. by
8 in. photograph of King Mongkut sitting on his throne. A wonderful
