Rare Autograph Quotation of Mary Elizabeth Lease
Lease was the Model for L. Frank Baum’s “Dorothy” in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Lease, Mary Elizabeth (1853-1933). Author, orator, advocate of the suffrage and temperance movements. Wrote “Problems of Civilizations Solved” (1896). Editor of the World newspaper and editor of National Encyclopedia of American Biography. Her supporters called her “Queen Mary” and “Mother Lease”. Her detractors called her “Mary Yellin”. She was a powerful orator an some of her enemies called her “petti-coated smut-mill” because of her venomous tongue. Very scarce to rare autograph quotation signed on an album page: “Sioux City, Ia. Sept.17th 1895. The highest mission of human genius is to lighten the burdens and lesser the sorrows of Earth’s toiling millions and hasten the day when Justice shall prevail and the ‘Brotherhood of Man’ be established throughout the world.
