FOUNDER OF LEAR JET CORP
LEAR, William (1902-1978). American inventor and businessman. Founded Lear Jet Corp. From the 1930 to the 60’s he earned over 100 patents. He invented the first practical automobile radio, the airplane radio compass and the autopilot. His technology helped make the Allied victories possible. He also invented the eight tract tape. He envisioned teleporting (beaming in Star Trek). A choice “Bill Lear” signature on a First Day Cover for the US 17 cent Air Mail stamp. Postmarked, Lakehurst, NJ, July 13, 1971.
