JOHNSON, Lyndon B. (1908-1973). 36th President of the United States (1963-1969). Succeeded to the presidency following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He was responsible for designing the “Great Society” which was legislation that included laws that upheld civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicade and the “War on Poverty.” He served as the 37th Vice-President of the U.S. from1961-1963.
