First Commissioner of the N.F.L.

LAYDEN, Elmer  (1903-1973).  Football player & coach; fullback member of the “Four Horsemen of Notre Dame.”  First Commissioner of the N.F.L. (1941-46).  Autograph letter signed “Elmer”, 4 pages, August 15, 1924, Davenport, Iowa. A love letter to his sweetie  from the young star. In part: “Darling... I wanted to go over to see the game... maybe you would come down to see me. It’s a shame that I can’t get what I want. I am the un-luckiest bugger going... What do you Love...I have been on the lookout for someone coming ’breakneck’ speed, but as yet have spotted no one.  I wish…I could come there, and stay with you always...” Together with the original hand addressed envelope. Both in fine condition.
