- Stephanes Johnannes Paulus Kruger (1824-1904).
South African Boer Statesman and
President of Transvaal. Fought the Zulus and became Commandant
General of the Transvaal forces in 1884. Last President of Transvaal
(1883-1900). Sought refuge in Europe after the English defeated
the Boers. His body was returned to Pretoria for burial in 1905.
The South African 1 ounce Krugerrand is named in his honor and
his image appears on the coin.
