KOLLEK, Teddy (1911-2007). Extremely popular six-time Mayor of Jerusalem. He promoted Jewish/Arab coexistence in a city physically divided until Israel annexed the eastern neighborhoods following the 1967 Middle East War. He was the driving force behind Jerusalem’s evolution from a hilltop town coveted by the world’s leading religions and contested by the Palestinian people to a modern metropolis of arts and tourism. In 1934 he helped found Kibbutz Ein Gev on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. During WWII he helped European Jews escape Nazi persecution, securing the transfer of thousands from concentration camps to Great Britain. He was appointed Israel’s envoy to Washington following the state’s founding in May 1948. He ran the office of David Ben Gurion for a decade.
