Father of Artificial Organs One of the Most Important Physicians of the 20th Century KOLFF, Willem  (1911-2009).  Pioneer of hemodialysis as well as in the field of artificial organs.     Kolff organized the first blood bank in Europe (1940).  He developed the 1st functioning artificial kidney. He was involved in the development of the heart lung machine.
