KENNY, Sister Elizabeth (1880-1952). Australian nurse, promoted a controversial new approach to the treatment of poliomyelitis. Kenny’s principals of muscle rehabilitation became the foundation of physical therapy. In 1911 she opened a cottage hospital treating confirmed cases of infantile paralysis (polio). During WW1 she cared for patients on troop ships that ran from Australia to England. Kenny was based in America for 11 years. She lunched with President Franklin D. Roosevelt discussing his treatment in Warm Springs, Georgia. Kenny was the only woman, during the first 10 years of the Most Admired Woman, to replace Eleanor Roosevelt in the #1 spot. Her former patients include Alan Alda and Dinah Shore. Rare oversized photograph, B&W, appx. 11”x14” full length of Sister Elizabeth Kenny walking with a gentleman.
