JAPANESE ZERO ACE WHO SHOT DOWN PAPPY BOYINGTON
KAWATO, Masajiro (1925-2008). Japanese Zero Pilot, who had 19 kills and suffered 17 wounds. During his lifetime was regarded by many as Japan’s greatest WWII Ace. He downed the Black Sheep Squadron’s leader Pappy Boyington on Jan. 3, 1944. Boyington was picked up by a Japanese Submarine and was held a prisoner until war’s end. Photograph, black & white, 4”x6” full length pose standing in front of his plane. Signed twice in English and Japanese. He continues to write in English: “Japanese WWII Ace, 19V, Shot down Col. Greg.
