Rare Letter of One of the Greatest Photographers
KARSH, Yousuf (1908-2002). Armenian born. Known as one of the most famous and accomplished portrait photographers. Early typed letter signed, one and a half pages on his name imprinted letterhead. July 8th 1948 to J.R. Kennedy, Esq. Chairman of the Board, Rexall Drug Company. Karsh writes in part: “Now that a rather hectic few weeks of traveling are behind me, I can give my attention to your letter of June 11th, which has been awaiting me. Let us discuss the various proofs in the same order you have mentioned them:” The photographer goes into detail how changes can be made in several points. Just a few examples of the points are “offending hand can be subdued considerably and so make it less noticeable” and “the double chin effect is mostly a reflection of the white collar, and can be remedied without difficulty.” In point #6 he states: “This is a superb study and an eloquent expression of your most accomplished hands. I made it purely for your own interest and personal use if you so desired. But whether or not you choose to have it finished, I will keep it on file.” Karsh goes on to say: “I agree with you entirely on your selection of Nos.8 and 5. My third choice is definitely No.10, however I cannot exclude Nos.2 and 9, both of which will finish extremely well. In the meantime I am proceeding with the prints from positions 8 and 5, and shall await your decision regarding the other three portraits as well as No.7. When you know what glossies you will need for magazine and newspaper use, I shall be glad to prepare and send them to you quickly. Madame Karsh joins me…..” Signed “Yousuf Karsh”. One mailing fold else fine condition and Karsh is very scarce in signed letters especially with such fine and detailed content......... $275.00
