“..they could have never got me to end it with that fairy tale about Hoover grabbing me personally..” Extraordinary Content T.L.S. From Public Enemy #1 KARPIS, Alvin (1908-1977). Criminal, Public Enemy #1, the F.B.I.’s Most Wanted Man. Member of the Ma Barker Gang (Karpis/Barker Gang). Sentenced for murder, bank robbery, kidnapping and train robbery. Subject to the largest manhunt in history. Personally captured by J.Edgar Hoover in 1936. Served 33 years in prison. Parolled in 1969 and deported to Canada. Rare, typed letter signed, to his biographer (Bob Livesey), Saturday, Nov. 16, 1974. A very lengthy letter: “Dear Bob…several events have occurred that I thought might be of interest to you. I have received several letters, etc. regarding that TV program and also a clipping from the N.Y. Times and I for the life of me cannot see why I am not entitled to a piece of the loot they CBS must have taken in for that film. Maybe I am wrong but I will have to see what the three attorneys that I have so far contacted have to say on the subject, along with other people I have asked…..You know, as one letter from NY City had to say to me; had they hired me as consultant for that program it would have no doubt been a real macaroon but on the other hand they could have never got me to end it with that fairy tale about Hoover grabbing me personally. Not for the love of money and maybe, just maybe someone will someday see the potential of us getting together and making a film about it with my version of the arrest along with me taking a test with one of those lie detector things to make it more forceful because after all surely all of those 26-28 agents that participated in my arrest can’t be all dead nor can I visualize all of those still alive committing perjury just to back up the so badly tarnished image of Hoover…I remember how disastrous the depression was for the east coast of Florida but eventually it came back and increased ten fold in value so the only thing that might stop it would be a global all out war which would naturally be the end of everything for centuries….I would like for you to give thought to the great potential of a group of Canadians doing a film on the true story of the ‘Capture of Alvin Karpis’ along with the names of some of the agents that actually did it. It would have to be a winner because any lawsuits would result in the thing being viewed by that many people and in the final analysis it would come out that it was my version, not Hoover’s that was the truthful one…” In excellent condition, signed with blue ink.
