Signed a Year before his Death
KARPIS, ALVIN (1908-1977) Bank robber along with his Barker brothers sidekicks were also auto thieves, train robbers and even murderers. They engineered two major kidnapping of rich executives in the 30’s. In 1926 he found himself spending 10 years for burglary., however in 1930 he participated in a jail break. In 1932 Hoover and his n captured Karpis however no on brought handcuffs. One agent used his tie on Karpis’s hands. Karpis was sentenced to life in prison. He was pardoned during the late 60’s. He spent more time in Alcatraz than any other prisoner.
A fabulous, mint U.S. $2.00 note, Series 1976. Signed with a two word sentiment; “Best wishes Alvin Karpis”. This is the first signed U.S. Currency we have seen signed by Public Enemy #1. There were only four persons ever named Public Enemy #1 and Karpis was the last and only one captured alive .............$225.00
