JUSTINIAN I. (483-565 AD.) A devout Christian, one of the most important rulers of the late antiquity. Known as Justinian the Great. Byzantine Emperor who ruled from 527-565 AD. He forbade Jews from reading the Bible in Hebrew. He is considered a Saint by the Eastern Orthodox Christians. Incredible striking coin of the Byzantine Emperor. Gold coin made roughly of 23K fine gold which has amazing preservation of detail. Minted in Constantinople, now Istanbul, the coins denomination is Solidus. This coin has a small hole likely punched in antiquity to be worn by a local elite who used this coin as jewelry. Bust of Justinian, helmeted holding a globus cauciges and shield decorated with horseman motif. On the other side is an angel holding a long staff surmounted by staurogram and globus cruciger, star in right field. Illustration enlarged to show detail.
