Rare Andrew Johnson D.S. During His Impeachment Proceedings
JOHNSON, Andrew (1808-1875). 17th President of the United States. Partly printed document signed as President. Oblong, folio. Washington, D.C., April 25, 1868. Countersigned by William Seward, Secretary of State. Large white embossed seal of the United States affixed to the lower left of the document. President Johnson appoints C.F. Preston to be Interpreter of the Chinese Language at the Consulate of the United States at Canton, China. Somewhat split in the folds but strengthened on the verso with acid free preservation tape. Light tan discoloration bottom left of document, much of which could be matted out. The impeachment proceedings were held from March 13, 1868 to May 26, 1868. Out of 54 members of the Senate, 35 voted for conviction. Johnson was acquitted by one vote. Anything signed by Andrew Johnson while President and especially during the impeachment proceedings is especially scarce. Most Johnson appointments are signed with his stamped signature. The signature of Andrew Johnson on this document is very bold and dark. Small engraved portrait of Johnson affixed to the top right corner of the document.
