Saddam became President of Iraq on July 16, 1979. On Jully 22 1979, he convened as assembly to read out a confession of the names of 68 co-conspirators. Those members were then removed from the room and taken into custody. They were found guilty of treason. Twenty-two were sentenced to execution and other high ranking members of the party formed a firing squad. By August 1, hundreds of party members were executed.

The armed conflict between Iran and Iraq ran from September 1980 thru August 1988. In 1984, France decided to supply aircraft which enabled Baghdad to intensify its operation against Iranian oil facilities.
Aysami was Vice-President of Syria from Dec. 28,1965 to 23 February 1966. In 1966 he fled to Iraq. He became Deputy Secretary General of the National Command of the Iraq based Ba’ath Party.
