HOY, William E. “Dummy” (1862-1961) Legendary baseball player. The only deaf-mute to play in the major leagues, he was also one of the smallest players at only 5’4” and 150 pounds. Put in 14 seasons as an outfielder in the 1880’s and 1890’s for Washington, Buffalo, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Chicago. He batted .287 lifetime and stole 594 bases. He still holds the record for throwing three runners out at home from center field in the same game. He had 1002 walks and remains one of the most difficult players to strike out in the history of the game. Especially important is that baseball signs were developed specifically for him and remain an integral pat of the game today. Many believe he is a sure bet to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
