Author - Battle Hymn of the Republic
HOWE, Julia Ward (1819-1910). American social reformer. Leader in the woman-suffrage movement. Author of the “Battle hymn of the Republic” (1862) which was written after she attended a review of Union Troops at Bailey’s Cross Roads outside Washington during which she witnessed a sudden and unexpected attack by the enemy on Nov. 20, 1861. That night she lay in a dark room and wrote line after line and the song was quickly composed. Interesting conclusion of an A.L.S., complete in itself: “interesting, may your efforts avail to make them known. And Oh! May heaven extend its protection to our prosecuted fellow Christians! Yours with affectionate regard, Julia W. Howe (over) 241 Beacon St.” Very fine condition................ $250.00
