Author - Battle Hymn of the Republic
HOWE, Julia Ward (1819-1910). American social reformer. Leader in the woman-suffrage movement. Author of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” (1862) which was written after she attended a review of Union Troops at Bailey’s Cross Roads outside Washington during which she witnessed a sudden and unexpected attack by the enemy on Nov. 20, 1861. That night she lay in a dark room and wrote line after line and the song was quickly composed. Offered is the conclusion to a six page autograph letter signed, complete in itself, most likely written during the Civil War. She writes: “God speed. Hoping to meet you all before many months are ended and praying God to keep the country so dear to us all, I am always, your affectionate president, Julia Ward Howe.” A wonderful statement and signed with her full signature. Nice margins for framing......................................$375.00
