Called the Greatest Fighter Pilot in WWII
HOWARD, James H. (1913-1995). Air Force General, recipient of the Medal of Honor. Ace Squadron leader of the Flying Tigers. Fought against the Japanese prior to Pearl Harbor. Six definite kills with 4 unconfirmed. In 1942 he joined the Air Force in Europe and had 9 kills with 8 unconfirmed. In 1944 he single handedly attacked over 30 Nazi planes while on a long range mission deep into enemy territory while providing support for a heavy bomber formation. He was called the greatest fighter pilot of WWII. He was the only fighter pilot in Europe to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.
