First Person to Brew Root Beer
The Longest Continuously Made Soft Drink in the U.S.
SHIRES, Charles E. (1851-1937). A Quaker pharmacist who in the 1870’s formulated the Hires Root Beer beverage. He learned about a similar beverage on his honeymoon in New Jersey. The woman who ran the hotel served a “root tea”. At the 1876 U.S. Centennial Exposition held in Philadelphia he called his drink “The Temperance Drink” the greatest health beverage in the world. He owned sugar plantations in Cuba. Today, Hires Root Beer is manufactured and marketed by Dr. Pepper Snapple Group. Typed letter signed on his ornate name imprinted letterhead displaying the colorful “Drink Hires Root Beer” logo. Philadelphia, May 6, 1932 to the National Employment Commission at the Biltmore Hotel in NYC. Charles Hires writes that they can’t give a contribution as they feel their first responsibility is to our own employees and those of our employees who are not at the moment employed but whom we are endeavoring to care for to the best of our ability.
