Choice Content Letter on The Motion Picture
HAYS, Will H. (1879-1954). Motion Picture Executive. Appointed president of the Motion Picture Producers & Distributors of America. This was formed to improve the image of the industry after a number of scandals. He served under president Harding as his Postmaster General. Created the Hays Code in 1930 which molded the content and image of the films in the years to come. T.L.S., imprinted stationery of Motion Picture Producers & Distributors of America, Inc., Feb. 23, 1928 to George Adams. Hays begins saying in part: “...As an interpreter of public opinion and having a responsibility in its formation, the viewpoint of an editor with respect to motion pictures is of great value...without constructive criticism, which is essential in all human progress, the motion picture cannot reach its maximum usefulness. To be of value such criticism comes only with understanding all of the problems involved... This Association is seeking by various means to get the understanding of the public, which will bring to motion pictures the kind of suggestions that will enable the industry better to serve the public...” Boldly signed.
