Poet Laureate of the Confederacy
HAYNE, Paul H. (1830-1886). South Carolina poet. Served in the Confederate Army in 1861. He lost all his possessions, his home and major library when Charleston was bombarded in 1962, Co-founder of Russell’s Magazine. Known throughout country as the Poet Laureate of the Confederacy. Uncommon autograph letter signed, 2 pages, Augusta, 6/3/1874. In part: “The poem Cloud Pictures is beautifully printed. “Caught In The Woods” my second poem sent you, you can of course retain just as long as you please. Let it takes its turn whenever its turn arrives. Yes I couldn’t resist the impulse which prompted me to do some honor to our friend...upon her birthday. She is a very remarkable woman...to know her is to like her...” Signed in full. A four line P.S. states: “The check you mentioned has not come yet...on its arrival, I’ll send you a receipt.” Tipped to a larger sheet.
