HAYES, R. B. (1822-1893) Rutherford B. Hayes had been commissioned Major in the 23rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1861, attaining the rank of Major General of Volunteers. He saw action at South Mountain (where he was wounded in 1862), the second Battle of Winchester, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek, where he was badly stunned when his horse was killed. Hayes later served as Republican Congressman from Ohio (1865-1867) and Governor of Ohio (1868-1872, 1876-1877) before being elected 19th U.S. President (1877-1881). A very desirable Executive Mansion card signed. When starting a collection of these cards, Hayes is the very first you will be able to acquire. They are much in demand and slowly loosing availability in the autograph hobby. There is only one known Grant Executive Mansion “signed” to appear in the market. Theodore Roosevelt changed the name of Executive Mansion to “White House” and shortly after to “The White House.” This Hayes card has some mounting traces on the verso otherwise in very good condition.................SOLD
