HAYES, R. B. (1822-1893) Rutherford B. Hayes had been commissioned Major in the 23rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1861, attaining the rank of Major General of Volunteers. He saw action at South Mountain (where he was wounded in 1862), the second Battle of Winchester, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek, where he was badly stunned when his horse was killed. Hayes later served as Republican Congressman from Ohio (1865-1867) and Governor of Ohio (1868-1872, 1876-1877) before being elected 19th U.S. President (1877-1881). A very scarce, early signature (R.B. Hayes) seldom seen on heavy paper 1.25”x3.5”.................$325.00
