First President of the Czech Republic
HAVEL, Vaclav (1936-2011). Tenth President of Czechoslovakia (1989-1992). He was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for his involvement in the Czech human-rights movement. He was a noted playwright and author of many influential essays on totalitarianism and dissent. After the split of his country in 1993, he became the first president of the Czech Republic (1993-2003). His book: “The Art of the Impossible” A.A. Knopf, 1997, First Edition, so stated.
