HAMPTON, Wade (1819-1902). Confederate Lieutenant General of Cavalry. His daring exploits at Antietam, Gettysburg and Petersburg won him fame in both the North and South. Typed letter signed, one page, on the imprinted stationery of the Department Of The Interior, Office of Commissioner of Railroads, Washington, D.C. Dated, Dec.4, 1895. Hampton writes in part: “I received your kind letter, inviting me on behalf of Mrs. Trenholm to be present with you at the annual Business Men’s Entertainment in Charleston. I have been very unwell and confined to my room for the past five or six weeks, which is my excuse for delaying so long to answer your letter. It would give me great pleasure to visit Charleston on that occasion, but for the reasons just mentioned it will be impossible for me to leave Washington...” One tear along bottom, basically in a clear area otherwise very good. Nice bold signature of Wade Hampton....................SOLD
