Author of “Roots”
HALEY, Alex (1921-1992). American author, served with the U.S. Coast Guard as a journalist (1939-1959). He conducted numerous interviews for Playboy Magazine including an interview with Malcolm X which resulted in his collaboration (as ghost writer) of The Autobiography Of Malcolm X (1965). Haley began researching his own black heritage and traced his family back seven generations to an African, Kunta Kinte, enslaved and brought to Annapolis in 1767. Haley created his own family chronical writing “Roots, The Saga of an American Family” (1976). This book was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize (1977.) Scarce autograph letter signed, one very full page on his name imprinted letterhead. April 2, 1987 Haley writes in part: “How on earth your November 1986 get dillied and dallied around within my office, and just this day reached me, I’ll never know!...........” Signed in full.
