Founder of the Society of Painters-Etchers Society now the
Royal Society of Painters-Printmakers and its first president
HADEN, Sir Francis Seymour (1818-1910). Surgeon, better known as an original etcher who championed original printmaking. He lived through the heart of the Etching Revival in Britain, and one of the founders of the Society of Painter-Etchers now the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, ad their first president. He was a major collector and scholar of Rembrandt’s prints. Among numerous distinctions Haden received the Grand Prix, Paris, in 1889 and 1900, and was made an honorary member of the Institute de France, Academie des Beaux-Arts and Societe des Artistes Francais. Haden was knighted in 1894 for his services "to the advancement of original etching and engraving. Autograph letter signed 3 pages, Midland Hotel, 3 Oct, n.y. he writes in part: “with all the pleasure imaginable, I do not know how many...” He continues to mention that: “...I heard of you at Sonning (Mill) from my wife and .... Did you go to the back of the Mill and see all their fine etchings there to be done? I am here for a moment on my way north to see my musical son. Yours very sincerely F.
