Rare Signed War Time Photograph of Rafael Angel Calderon Guardia
GUARDIA, Rafael Angel Calderon (1900-1970). President of Costa Rica (1940-1944). Worked with Franklin D. Roosevelt and became an ally of the United States during WWII. He imprisoned many Costa Rican’s of German descent. Guardia confiscated many of their assets including large coffee plantations. He introduced the minimum wage and a National Health Program. He also established the University of Costa Rica. Wonderful head and shoulders photograph, 7.5”x9” inscribed along with a two-word sentiment, signed and dated “San Jose Costa Rica, Dec.9/942.
