Noted Australian Prostitute
GRAY, Isabel W. (1851-1929). Australian prostitute, hotelier (Royal Mail Hotel) and storekeeper at Eulo, Australia. Located on the Paroo River. Eulo was a popular gathering place for travelers. She had a complaisant husband that enabled her to operate a successful courtesan. Her bedroom was stocked with liquor. She was given the name of “The Queen of Eulo.” In 1892, Isabel and her husband were charged with a variety of offenses, including disorderly conduct, assaulting the police, purchasing a sheep illegally, and passing a dishonored cheque. In response, she sued the police for assault, false imprisonment, and malicious prosecution. At 53 years old she married a 29-year-old Tasmanian. She became very wealthy wearing fine jewelry made of her favorite stone, opals. By 1926 she was living in poverty and later was admitted to a mental hospital. The Eulo Queen will live on as one of the characters of the southwest Queensland history. A very scarce two-word sentiment and signature (after all men were not asking her for an autograph) on an album page: “Yrs, sincerely Isabel W. Gray, Nov.15th 1918.” A collector has affixed a facial portrait of gray at the bottom right of the page...$55.00
