Israel’s Former Chief Rabbi Commands ‘Every Jew’ To Kill Arafat

GOREN, Rabbi Shlomo (1917-1996).  Polish born Chief Rabbi of Israel (1973-1983) who was a veteran of the Sinai Campaign (1956) and The Six Day War 91967), rising to the rank of Brigadier General. Rabbi Goren opposed the Oslo Accords, asserting that the Law of Moses overshadowed government policies in any evacuation of the West bank and Gaza. In June 1994, with Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, expecting to visit the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Goren issued a religious ruling calling upon Jews to kill Arafat.  Rabbi Shlomo Goren said he had made a formal Rabbinic ruling that declared: “There is no doubt that Yasser Arafat deserves death according to Israeli and International law.......It is therefore, a Commandment to kill Arafat, and there is no need to wait to bring him to trial”.  Goren continued interpreting Jewish religious law.  “Every Jew is Commanded to kill Arafat”.  Pressed by an Israeli radio interviewer on whether his ruling did not amount to an incitement to murder, Goren replied: “To kill Arafat is not a sin or a crime, but will bring a blessing to the person who does it and to his family”.  Goren who served as Chief Rabbi of Israel for a decade and before that as Chief Military Rabbi also said that Arafat “deserves killing” under Jewish law “because he is defined as a persecutor who declares war day and night against The State of Israel. His sentence as a persecutor is that anyone in Israel is obligated to kill him”.
Very rare autograph quotation signed: “To the Jews of Argentina, the Committee of the Communities, the Education Committee, to the Teachers & Educators. A year of peace, success, and blessed Aliyah” Signed “Shlomo Goren”.  Aliyah refers to the immigration of Jews to the land of Israel.  Most likely sent as a response to a request from a teacher’s group...........
