Leading Zionist

Founder of the World Jewish Congress and President of the World Zionist Organization

GOLDMANN, Nahum (1895-1982).  Zionist Leader born in Lithuania. During WW1 he supported a pro-German orientation of the Zionist movement and sought means of gaining the Kaiser’s support for the Zionist cause. In 1921-22 he conceived the idea of publishing a German language Jewish encyclopedia and founded the publishing house “Eshkol.”  Together with Stephen Wise he organized the World Jewish Congress and at the First Conference he was appointed its chairman.  He established the Zionist Emergency Council for political work and in 1935 as the head of the general Zionist Faction, he declared that the principal task of the Zionist movement was to create among the Jewish people the momentum for the establishment of a Jewish State in Erez, Israel. He took an active and decisive part in activities designed to bring about the immediate establishment of a Jewish state.  When the State of Israel came into being he was elected one of the two Chairman of the Executive of the Zionist Organization. Upon the death of Stephen Wise, he was elected President of the World Jewish Congress. He was Chairman of the 1st International Conference of Soviet Jewry (Paris 1960). His autobiography was written in 1969.

CARMEL, Moshe  (1911-2003) Israeli Political Leader and Major General. Born in Poland, he settled in Palestine in 1924 and since 1939 has been a member of Kibbutz Naan. He was an officer in the Haganah and later during the 1948 War of Independence he commanded the northern district 1948-49 with the rank of Brigadier General. He was also the commander of the “Carmeli Brigade.” Carmel worked very closely with Brigadier General Yaakov Dori and David Ben-Gurion during the capture of Haifa and the northern Galilee region.  As a member of the Knesset, he was Minister of Communications from 1955-59 and from 1965-1969.

Rare colorful postcard commemorating the Congreso Latino-American Pro Israel held in Montevideo, Uruguay in March 1956. Three special cancellations are commemorating this meeting. Hand addressed in Hebrew to Yaakov Dori in Haifa who was Israeli’s First Chief of Staff and who commanded the Israeli Army during the 1948 War of Independence.   Signed on the front in Hebrew by Nahum Goldmann and Moshe Carmel.  A very interesting piece of Jewish history linking three important names in the founding of the State of Israel. Warrants further research. In fine condition.........$175.00
