Matching Autograph Letters of Gilbert & Sullivan
GILBERT, Sir William (1836-1911). English humorist and playwright who joined together with Arthur Sullivan to produce outstanding operettas including “H.M.S. Pinafore” (1878) and “The Pirates of Penzance” (1879). Autograph letter signed, on page, on stationery imprinted “52, Pont Street, SW.” His telephone number is also imprinted. 12 Feb. 1905. To the Box Office of the Court Theatre he writes: “Please send me two stalls (front row, if possible) for the Matinee of Tues. next, 14th inst.” He adds a P.S. “Cheque for L1.1.0 enclosed.”
SULLIVAN, Sir Arthur (1842-1900). English composer Autograph letter signed, one page on the imprinted stationery “9. Albert Mansions, SW”. To My Dear Sir, Sullivan writes in part: “Will you kindly send me a cheque for…may be having credit on the books of the Dra:A: Society & oblige. Yours very truly” and signed in full. Both letters boldly written and in very good condition. A lovely matching pair for framing........................................SOLD
