- Autograph Quote Signed
- A Play on her most Famous
Verse
- "Rose is a rose
is a rose is a rose"
-
- Gertrude Stein (1874-1946). Legendary American writer, long a resident of
Paris, associated with Picasso, Matisse; coined the phrase "The
Lost Generation," describing the ex-patriate American writers
such as Hemingway and Thornton Wilder, who lived in Paris between the wars. Extremely
charming, eloquent, cheerful and overweight, indeed cheerfully
overweight, she had a large circle of friends and tirelessly
promoted herself. Her judgments in literature and art were highly
influential.
-
- Autograph Quote Signed, "Gertrude Stein, Eriel Dodge Gertrude
Stein. Gertrude Stein. Gertrude Stein. Gertrude Stein.",
being a play on her most famous verse, "Rose is a rose is
a rose is a rose," which was written by Stein as part of
the 1913 poem Sacred Emily, which appeared in the 1922 book Geography
and Plays. In that poem, the first "Rose" is the
name of a woman. Stein later used variations on the phrase in
other writings, and "A rose is a rose is a rose" is
probably her most famous quote, often interpreted as "things
are what they are".
-
- The "Ediel Dodge" may be a reference
to Mabel Dodge Luhan (1879-1962); American writer, salon hostess,
patron saint, and inspiration to an assortment of talented artists,
writers, and political radicals in the early decades of the 20th
century, and a leading symbol of the "New Woman." She
and Stein had a long, rocky relationship. The verse is on an
approximate 5 in. by 7 in. slip of paper, folds, very light,
marginal foxing, overall, a very fine example.
-
- Accompanied with an approximate 5 in.
by 7 in. black and white photograph. $1,250.00
