The Father of Science Fiction, Created the term Science Fiction
GERNSBACK, Hugo (1884-1967). Luxembourgish-American inventor, writer and best remembered for publishing the first known Science Fiction magazine. Called “The Father of Science Fiction.” The “Hugo Award” is named in his honor. Gernsback helped popularize amateur wireless. In 1908, he founded “Modern Electrics” the world’s first magazine about electronics and radio. It is estimated that 400,000 people in the U.S. were involved in amateur radio. In 1925, he founded Radio Station WRNY which was broadcasted from the 18th floor of the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. He created the term “Science Fiction.” Because he paid his workers low wages, H.P..Lovecraft called him “Hugo the Rat.” Very scarce signature and date “N.Y. 1961” on an attractive 3.5”x6” card.
