Tortured in Prison, Escaped from an Assassination
GAYOOM, Maumoon Abdul (1937- ). Islamic scholar who ruled the Maldives as president from 1978-2008. On January 8, 2008, he escaped from an attempted assassination. A person had a knife concealed in a Maldives flag and attempted to stab Gayoom. A Boy Scout was wounded by attacking the assassin. There were 3 attempts to overthrow Gayoom’s government during the 1980’s. The third attempt in 1988 was successful in controlling the capital city and most of the government offices. Gayoom was arrested in 2018 for conspiracy to overthrow the government. It is reported he was tortured by not being allowed medical treatment.
