GALLATIN, Albert (1761-1849). Swiss -American politician. Important leader of the Democratic-Republican Party. He represented Pennsylvania in the House of Representatives and the Senate. He became the longest tenured United States Secretary of the Treasury serving under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. He studied the languages of the Native Americans and is called “The Father of American Ethnolgy.” Excellent cover bearing a Free franking signature of Albert Gallatin as Secretary of the Treasury.
