Nobel Prize Recipient Spends 12 months in Prison
GAJDUSEK, D. Carleton (1923-2008. American physician and medical researcher. Recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine (1976). He studied KURU in New Guinea and lived among the Fore tribe where he discovered the practice of cannibalism. He performed many autopsies on KURU victims. The tribes people consumed the brains of deceased relatives. He returned to America with dozens of mostly boys. He was convicted of molestation and spent 12 months in prison. He then spent a self-imposed exile in Europe. Uncommon B&W photograph, half-length pose holding a pen. At the bottom right portion of the photograph, he has signed his name in full.
