FUENTES, Gregorio (1897-1901). Cuban fisherman. In 1928 Fuentes was 30 years old and was fishing near the Dry Tortugas he picked up a distress call from an American caught in a storm. It was Ernest Hemingway and that rescue proved to be the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Hemingway hired Gregorio Fuentes to be his skipper and Fuentes spent 22 years navigating the “Pilar” and mixing Hemingway’s drinks. Ernest Hemingway spent 2 years with Gregorio Fuentes in the Romano Archipelago hunting German Nazi submarines. They have a Thompson Sub Machine Gun bolted to their boat. The U.S. Navy commissioned Ernest Hemingway as an Enemy Scout. Gregorio Fuentes was immortalized as the character “Santiago” in his book The Old Man and the Sea. A 3”x5” signed with a full signature “Gregorio Fuentes.” Added below “Cojimar, Cuba” the town he lived in. Excellent condition......................................$75.00
