Friend of Victoria and Inspired Florence Nightingale
Referred to as “The Angel of Prisons”
FRY, Elizabeth (1780-1845) English prison reformer and Quaker philanthropist. Referred to as “The Angel of Prisons.” She had eleven children. She was admired and supported by Queen Victoria. Fry established a nightly shelter in London for the homeless. She campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade. In 1840 she opened a training school for nurses. He programs inspired Florence Nightingale who took a team of Fry nurses to assist wounded soldiers in the Crimean War. Fry was depicted on the Bank of England Five Pound Note from 2001-2006. L.S., one page, “Dear Charles, pray let me know how your dear Wife is after the dreadful event in her family-I trust she will bear it with fortitude give my kindest love to her. Ever yours affectionate.” Signed in very old age, possibly the last year of her life. “Eliz th Fry.” In fine condition......................................$175.00
