First Woman in History to Directly Try To Kill a President
FROMME, Lynette (1948- ) Member of the Manson Family best known as “Squeaky Red”. She appeared with her head shaven for his trial. She received a life sentence for her attempt to assassinate president Gerald R. Ford. She aimed a 45 caliber gun at Ford on the grounds of the California State Capitol on Sept. 5, 1975. A Secret Service agent grabbed the weapon before it could be fired. Fromme became a bizarre symbol of counter-culture terrorism at her 1975 arraignment trial. Clad in bright red she was repeatedly ejected from the court room and at her sentencing she hit the prosecutor with an apple. Fine, legal size envelope hand addressed by Fromme.
