One of the Most Identifiable and Powerful Images in History
FRANKLIN, Thomas E. (1966- ) American photographer for the Bergen Record newspaper in New Jersey. Best known for his photograph Raising The Flag at Ground Zero which depicts three fire fighters raising the American Flag at the World Trade Center after the September 11, 2001 attack. Franklin has won numerous awards for his photography. His photograph of the flag raising is one of the most identifiable and powerful images in history. Life Magazine listed it as one of the “100 Photographs That Changed the World.” In 2002 he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his photo from 9/11. In 2002, the U.S. Postal Service introduced the ”Heroes” postage stamp. In 2002 an autographed original print signed by Franklin and the three fire fighters sold for $89,625.00 at Christie’s Auction House.
