Very Scarce Signature of Explorer Sir John Franklin
FRANKLIN, Sir John (1786-1847). British Royal Navy Officer and explorer of the Arctic. He participated in the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic War. He was Lt. Governor of Van Diemen’s Land now known as Tasmania (1837-1843). Franklin disappeared on his last expedition attempting to navigate the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. His icebound ships were abandoned and the entire crew perished from starvation even though some crew members resorted to cannibalism. In September 2014, the Prime Minister of Canada announced that the wreck of the HMS Erebus one of the two ships from Franklin’s voyage was discovered. In September 2016 Arctic Research Foundation found the wreck of the HMS Terror in pristine condition. Franklin is considered a hero who led his men in the quest for the Northwest Passage.
