Mt. St. Helens named after him
FITZHERBERT, Alleyne (1753-1839) 1st Baron St Helens. Diplomat. Envoy extraordinary to Empress Catherine of Russia. In 1792 George Vancouver, explorer, and the officers of the HMS Discovery made the Europeans first sighting of a large mountain. They named the mountain, Mount St. Helens after the newly created Baron St. Helens. Envelope addressed in the hand of St. Helens, postmarked: “FREE” dated 28 October 1825 with the Free Franking signature “Free St. Helens.” Together with a pen, filled with ash from Mt.
