Very scarce manuscript letter signed as President on black bordered stationery
Fillmore, Millard (1800-1874). The thirteenth President of the United States (1850-1853). Fabulous manuscript document signed by D. Goddard, Secretary of the Interior, ad interim. One-page, Washington, July 25, 1850 on black bordered stationery. “To The President of the United States” the Secretary of the Interior writes to the President asking that the penalty for a bond for Genesco, Michigan be reduced from $150,000 to $50,000. “The sales at that office for the last three years have not averaged $7,000, and I therefore concur with the Commissioner of the General Land Office in the opinion expressed by him that $50,000 is sufficient for the penalty of the bond, and have the honor to recommend that it be reduced to that sum…” At the bottom of this letter is written by D. Goddard: “Executive Office, July 25th 18500 Let the penalty of the bond be fixed accordingly at $50,000.” Signed Millard Fillmore. This wonderful manuscript endorsement as President was signed just two weeks after taking his oath of office upon the death of President Zachary Taylor. In very fine condition with Fillmore’s signature as nice as one could expect..........................$1450.00
